Binsight.
Binsight is an innovative connected bin technology developed through a strategic partnership between Contel and Biffa to transform how food waste collections are understood, measured, and improved.
Using advanced industrial sensors integrated into collection operations, Binsight captures real-time data on when household food waste caddies are presented for collection. That information is securely transmitted to the Contel Connected cloud platform, where it is analysed to provide meaningful service intelligence for waste operators and local authorities.
The Result: A new level of visibility into participation rates, service performance, and operational demand, enabling smarter decision-making across collection services.

What is Binsight?

Turning data
into better intelligence.
For local authorities and waste operators, understanding participation has historically been difficult and resource-intensive. Binsight changes that.
The system delivers accurate, street-level insights without tracking individual households, maintaining privacy while providing actionable intelligence. Early trials have demonstrated extremely high accuracy rates and minimal impact on collection crews, confirming that the technology integrates seamlessly into real-world operations.

Supporting the Future of
Food Waste Collections.
Binsight has been developed at a critical time for the UK waste sector. Mandatory household food waste collections are being rolled out across England, increasing the need for accurate participation data and service optimisation.
By combining Contel’s expertise in connected technology with Biffa’s operational knowledge, Binsight provides a practical, scalable solution that helps organisations prepare for regulatory change while improving sustainability outcomes.

What our customers say...
"We welcome any innovation that provides deeper insight into how our residents engage with kerbside recycling services and the District Council is pleased to support the trial of this innovative food waste bin technology. Access to accurate data is key to improving recycling behaviours, enabling us to identify where support is needed and to deliver targeted education and engagement that helps residents recycle more effectively."

A collaborative partnership in action.
The partnership between Contel and Biffa brings together technology innovation and operational excellence. The long-term vision is to enable continuous service intelligence across waste rounds through smart sampling, analytics, and reporting, giving operators and authorities the tools they need to deliver more efficient, environmentally responsible services. Look out for our team, alongside Biffa, at events across the UK this year.
